Midterm season tips for freshmen

You’ve made it halfway through your first semester at Fresno State! As you prepare for a wave of exams and important deadlines, it’s important to remember there are resources available on campus to support your academic and personal success:
- Learning Center
Located in the lower level of the Fresno State Library, the Learning Center offers three unique services to support students: tutoring, supplemental instruction (commonly referred to as SI) and academic success coaching.
Tutoring sessions offer 1-1 assistance from a peer tutor, supporting hundreds of courses on campus. You can schedule tutoring sessions ahead of time or drop in for a walk-in appointment, depending on the course with which you need assistance.
SI sessions offer a space for you to study with peers for a specific course and are led by students who previously completed the same course. In SI, students compare notes, discuss readings, develop study strategies and prepare for exams and quizzes. Students who attend SI sessions typically earn a half or full letter grade higher than their peers who do not attend SI.
Academic Success Coaching provides personalized support in a one-on-one setting. You can learn about study skills, time management, personal motivation and more.
- Amendola Family Student Cupboard
Located in Industrial Technology 9, the Amendola Family Student Cupboard provides free food and hygiene products (including diapers) to Fresno State students. You can also receive assistance with CalFresh applications from Amendola Family Student Cupboard staff members.
- Student Health and Counseling Center
The Student Health and Counseling Center provides free and low-cost medical care, counseling services and prescription medications to Fresno State students.
The Student Health and Counseling Center is also hosting two free flu shot clinics in room 207 of the Resnick Student Union: on October 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on October 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Student Recreation Center
Take a study break and head to the Student Recreation Center, where you can dedicate time to your physical health. The Rec Center offers weight and cardio equipment, an indoor track, racquetball courts, group fitness classes and more. Students can use the Student Recreation Center and its services for free.
- Affinity group centers
There are a number of programs on campus dedicated to serving and providing resources for affinity groups. These programs also offer opportunities for students within affinity groups to connect with their peers. Among these programs are the Dream Success Center, which serves DACA and undocumented students, and two new centers created through the Black Student Success Initiative (BSSI) and the Southeast Asian Student Success Initiative (SEASS). Offices for both BSSI and SEASS are located in Joyal 224.
“It’s important to take care of yourself during this busy time of the semester,” Dean of Students Terree Stevenson said. “The Division of Student Affairs and my office, specifically, are here to support you and help you succeed.”
Get in touch with the office of the dean of students if you need additional assistance or don’t know where to go for help: 559.278.8740 or dos@mail.fresnostate.edu.
