Mindy Kates receives Outstanding Alumni Award

Mindy Kates, Fresno State’s Survivor Advocate and the head of the Survivor Advocacy Services at Fresno State’s Student Health and Counseling Center, recently received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Central Unified School District for her service to the community and commitment to students.
“I feel honored to have received this award because it is not often that those of us who do confidential work get acknowledged for the work we do for our community,” Kates said. “Getting this award during Domestic Violence Awareness Month made it more special and it was a very heartfelt moment.”
With over 24 years of experience, Kates has demonstrated outstanding character while working with everyone from infants to adults. She said, “The hardest thing is going up against bureaucracy and wanting to support people more but not being able to [because of] certain laws or policies.”
As her work continues to progress in our community, Kates shared a piece of advice, saying, “Make sure you have a strong support system to get you through this work. My partner is my number one support system, but also my friends and coworkers who have always been a big support.”
