Connect with local employers, find internship opportunities

Meet the Professionals: Internship Edition is a free mixer open to all students, giving them the opportunity to connect with local employers from various industries looking to hire interns. Meet the Professionals will be hosted by the Career Development Center, on November 9 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the University Dining Hall’s East Banquet Room.

The Career Development Center has proven to be successful in connecting students with employers and helping them take the initial steps in their career journeys.

Through her internship she found with the help of the Career Development Center, recent graduate Jennavieve Dechow was able to find her passion in healthcare and making a positive impact on the community.

Dechow said, “I saw an email from [the Career Development Center] about the internship over winter break…I wanted to be a part of anything related to Valley Children’s, because I used to volunteer there and really loved that experience. When I saw there was a possibility to work with them again, I jumped at the opportunity.”

Dechow spent her final semester working as an intern at the hospital while completing her studies in marketing. As an intern, she served as a member of the hospital’s recruitment department, assisting with application review for potential hires, managing personnel files and collaborating with other staff members from across the organization. She also served as a recruiter at career and internship fairs hosted by the Career Development Center, connecting other Fresno State students with internship and job opportunities at Valley Children’s Hospital.

“I [was] a marketing major in a recruiter position, so I didn’t know if I was going to know what I’d be doing, but it was a really good process to step into a role I wasn’t familiar with and learn from others, get coaching and training, and realize, ‘I can actually do this job, and it’s not something I had known about before or had previous experience with. I had this internship, tried something out, ended up really liking it, and was able to integrate some of my experience from marketing as well.’”

In thinking about life after college, Dechow said she would love to continue working with Valley Children’s, but that her biggest aspiration is to make an impact in her community. “I would like to be a part of something bigger than myself…It’s a broad goal, but being in the right company and in the right spot, you can make an impact in the community…That’s something that I really like [about Valley Children’s]. It’s very mission driven, so even if you’re having a mundane day at work, in a recruiter role, you’re hiring nurses who are going to save the lives of the kids coming in. What I’m doing is important and makes a difference.”
