Department highlight: TRIO Student Support Services Program

What is TRIO Student Support Services Program: TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSSP) provides undergraduates with academic support, financial aid literacy and education, and graduate school preparation support to endure every individual’s successful retention and graduation. The program is dedicated to serving first-generation students and students from low-income backgrounds.

Under the umbrella of the program, there are also programs designed specifically to support veteran students and students with disabilities.

How many students participate in the program: TRIO SSSP is funded to serve 140 students, but has exceeded this number, serving 155 students.

Student eligibility: Students are eligible for the program if they are from a low-income background, are a first-generation student, or have a documented disability. Full eligibility requirements can be found here.

Applications to join the program open in January 2025.

Where is TRIO SSSP located: Lab School, room 9.

Who is part of the team: TRIO SSSP is managed and operated by four professional staff members, including Jessica Turney, interim director; Griselda Cervantes, program counselor; Allyssa Lucero, reading and writing specialist; and Saundra Williams, program assistant.

Additionally, the program has seven student staff members: Jennifer Herrera, Juan Garcia Jr. and Brandon Xiong serve as peer mentors, and Tiffany Chep, Gurleen Kaur, Brenda Manyvanh and Naylene Velasquez serve as academic facilitators.
