Fresno State’s Dog Days: New Student Orientation team welcomes thousands of incoming freshmen and transfer students to campus each summer. For many students, the Dog Days staff members are the first people they meet at Fresno State, serving as a guide and anchor as they transition to life at the university. What makes the Dog Days team unique is that it is primarily composed of student employees.

Students interested in joining the Dog Days team can apply now through December 20.

Students can apply for three different positions within the program:

  • Blue Team (Orientation Leader): assisting incoming students with class registration and providing additional information regarding on-campus resources.
  • Red Team (Logistics Leader): providing support and accommodations for students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • Spanish Family Program Assistant: serving as an ambassador to students’ parents and families during orientation by providing essential information in Spanish.

Each position requires its own application, all of which can be accessed through Hire Fresno State.

Ximena Guzman Tapia, the program’s Spanish program assistant lead said, “A memorable Dog Days orientation can shape [students’] entire journey here, setting the tone for a successful and engaging college experience. As one of the most comprehensive resources they receive at the start, Dog Days helps students explore their major, discover campus resources, and navigate course selections with confidence.”

A double major in Chicano Latino American Studies and Health Science, Guzman Tapia has served on the Dog Days team for two years. In her role with Dog Days, she translates presentations from English to Spanish, designs flyers highlighting important campus resources and creates a safe space for Spanish Speaking families during orientation sessions.

Guzman Tapia said, “I enjoy the friendships I have created with other students who work for Dog Days as well. They became the people that support me and help my journey at Fresno State be so much more memorable and fun. I enjoy the opportunity I get to network with other staff and faculty members of Fresno State. Most importantly, I enjoy being able to help the parents feel more at ease and calm about their students coming to Fresno State. Being able to see them leave with a smile and tell me they know their student will succeed here at Fresno State is what makes me enjoy Dog Days so much.”
