Phong Yang was appointed associate vice president for strategic enrollment management at Fresno State by Dr. Kent Willis, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, effective January 10.

In this position, Yang will oversee admissions and recruitment, outreach and special programs and the office of the registrar.

Willis said, “Notably, this is reimagined from prior history at Fresno State. The new configuration emphasizes developing and implementing outreach programs that aim to improve college readiness, modernize processes, and better support staff to improve college-going rates through improvements in recruitment and completion through student engagement.”

Yang is a two-time Fresno State alumni, who has dedicatedly served the university for over 20 years. He began his career in higher education in academic affairs, teaching Hmong courses and overseeing the linguistics department’s Summer Literacy Program.

He transitioned to student affairs in 2000, where he has served in a range of positions, most recently as the interim associate vice president for strategic enrollment management.

Yang said, “I am a part of Fresno State because of the compassionate individuals who surround me. Fresno State feels like home, and I consider myself fortunate to collaborate with like-minded colleagues who share my mission and passion.”

“I aspire to adopt a comprehensive approach to enrollment management, aiming to position Fresno State as the flagship institution in the Central Valley. This involves building strong pipelines for potential students and emphasizing the affordability and value of a Fresno State degree. Additionally, I intend to collaborate with university partners to enhance student retention and reconnect with those who have left without completing their degrees. In addition, exploring innovative technologies and forging new partnerships will be crucial in establishing Fresno State as the university of choice for students.”
