Nearly 3,600 incoming students from across California gathered for Preview Day at Fresno State on March 16.

Hosted by the office of admissions and recruitment, Preview Day gives students who have been offered admission for the upcoming academic year an opportunity to learn more about the university, their chosen majors and colleges and the resources available to them on campus. Students also have the opportunity to officially accept their admissions for the fall semester and register for Dog Days New Student Orientation, where they will be able to enroll in their fall classes.

All incoming students attending Preview Day this year were also—for the first time ever—entered into a scholarship drawing. There was one $5,000 scholarship and five $1,000 scholarships available.

An all-day event, Preview Day kicked-off with a welcome session in which students and their accompanying family, friends and guardians learned about the university through a game of trivia and heard a short speech from Phong Yang, associate vice president of strategic enrollment management.

Yang said, “This is where your life starts changing—today. In just a few months, you start school here with about 6 thousand other new students, and you’ll go on to be inventors, business people, teachers, whatever your heart desires. Choosing to be here is the first thing you can do to change your life, and by being here, you’ve made the right choice.”

Students and their guests then were guided to buildings across campus to experience their respective college’s showcase, followed by campus tours and a resource fair where students could connect with staff members from programs and services across campus, including the Student Health and Counseling Center, Student Housing and Financial Aid.

Throughout the day, students were reminded that Fresno State remains one of the most affordable four-year universities in the nation—offering over $250 million in aid to its students, 60 percent of whom graduate debt-free.

Before ending the day at student success receptions and workshops, all students gathered at the speaker’s platform at the center of campus, where they were welcomed to the university by President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval and Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Kent Willis.

“Fresno State allows you to become the best version of yourself,” Jiménez-Sandoval said. “For yourself. Your family. Your community. You are all the future leaders of the Valley…when you’re at Fresno State, you are not just a number; you are someone deeply special to us.”

The president and vice president selected and announced the six scholarship recipients in an opportunity drawing. The scholarship recipients are: Edgar Larreynaga, Loryn Hunter, Weston Lewis, Adamary Garcia Cruz, Bao Xiong and Puneet Singh Urriz.

Following the scholarship drawing, students and their guests were treated to performances by three student dance groups: Los Danzantes de Aztlán, the Hmong Student Association and the Red Wavettes
